The Waterfall Walk.
The Waterfall Walk slopes gently up the hill and terminates by
a huge sycamore underplanted with martagon lilies. From here there
is a good view over the formal areas of the garden. It goes on,
up a steep slope to the topmost of our four waterfalls; but this
area is not open to our visitors as the slope and drops are precipitous
and dangerous.
This is a fairly wild part of the garden, planted with shrubs
and tough plants like Iris sibirica and specie foxgloves. A trio
of an unusual philadelphus is a real eyecatcher (and nosecatcher)
in midsummer.
The tree in the centre of the triangle of borders is the giant
magnolia campbellii but this is probably one for future generations
since, after fifteen years, it still shows no sign of flowering.
Gardeners are an optimistic lot.
