The Middle Garden 2

There's a picture of this bit of garden in Christopher Lloyd's Gardening with Colour'. He doesn't say where it is, but remarks that it must be in Scotland for the meconopsis to be growing in such robust profusion.

Next to the steps is one of the most eyecatching plants in the garden. This is the vast and sinister-looking Arisaema sp 'Makalu', collected by us in 1995 from the remote Makalu area of East Nepal. The clammy umbrella-like leaves, suffused with beetroot-red shelter purply-black aroid blooms that look more like internal organs than flowers.

Look out for it too in early spring when its fat coal black shoots pierce the ground like something from a horror film. We do grow appealing arisaemas too, I hasten to add. In June the elegant swathes of Arisaema candidissima unfurl, prettily candy-striped in pink and white. These cobra lilies are endlessly fascinating plants, and we grow as many as we can.
