The Middle Garden.

This patch of damp light woodland provides ideal conditions for some of the most exquisite plants we can grow in our gardens. Here are the great stands of blue poppies that our garden is known for, as well as wonderful North American specialities like trilliums and sanguinaria.

Look out too for Dicentra macrantha with large dangling moony-yellow flowers and Primula 'Inverewe', tomato-red on tall silver stems. The rhododendrons here are all species or near-species. A favourite with us is R. x loderi 'King George' with huge trusses of white blooms that perfume the whole garden.

There are many different Himalayan poppies - Meconopsis - here: from tall candelabra-like M. napaulensis to the dainty little harebell poppy, M. quintuplinervia. Several different forms of the big blue perennial poppies thrive and spread here, notably 'Betty Sherriff', 'Branklyn', and 'Bobby Masterton'. Showiest, perhaps is a huge swathe of Meconopsis 'George Sherriff Group' with pleated cobalt-blue flowers.
