Making the Garden 2
Luckily my first experiments with box-edged beds near the house
seemed to be exactly what was needed to 'anchor' the house to
its wild site.
Much of the area in front of the house is now formal and my philosophy
of enclosed areas containing loose and free-flowing planting seem
to work well.
Twin eighty-yards long mixed borders on the site of the Victorian
tennis court allow me to grow plenty of the herbaceous perennials
that are my especial passion.
I tend to think of the garden as a series of stage sets, but
as well as these orchestrated vistas, I aim for plenty of surprises
and hidden nooks and crannies."
