Making the Garden.

Janet Wheatcroft, Craigieburn's owner says:

"By the time I came to make the garden here, it had suffered decades of neglect. Brambles and scrub had rolled over it like Sleeping Beauty's castle.

It was two years before we even touched a spade and fork. The tools of these early years were chain-saw and machete.

Gradually fine old trees emerged, along with pairs of hollies, the remnants of the eighteenth-century garden. Apart from this, there was little of value left. But what an opportunity!

Areas of boggy ground and woodland dictated their own treatment, and, luckily, those are two styles of gardening that I love. But I also love formal gardens, topiary, and clipped yew and box.
