The Long Borders
On the site of an Edwardian lawn-tennis court, these are set-pieces
indulging our love for herbaceous perennial plants. They also
peak from midsummer through to autumn, reaching their best as
most woodland plants finish their annual display.
The borders are twins (though not identical ones) planted to
echo, but not slavishly copy, each other. Here we can grow those
border classics- the phloxes, daisies, monardas, irises, geraniums
and astilbes- all the plants that are the glory of high summer.
Each border is eighty yards long and fifteen feet deep, so there's
plenty of opportunity for some real fun.
At present they're only about five years old, so we're still
redistributing and adjusting to get the planting effects we want.
A path bisects the borders, leading from the stone terrace to
steps leading down to the middle garden.
