A short history of Craigieburn

Craigieburn is a new garden on an ancient site. People have lived on this pocket of land for more than five thousand years. The remains of an Iron-Age fort sit by the entrance gate, and later, a fortified tower was built, now part of our house.

Over the centuries, the valley has seen its share of bloodshed and mayhem as rival families feuded over land and livestock.

As the centuries of turbulence came to an end, people began to crave a more civilised lifestyle. In 1717 a new mansion was added in front of the old tower, and over the next decades all the trappings of a comfortable laird's life were added.

In 1796 fine stables and a coach house were built, an ice house added, and the first pleasure gardens were laid out.
