Craigieburn's Sherpa Gardener

My co-gardener, Dawa Sherpa, comes from the mountain ranges below Mount Everest, and he knows exactly how to place and grow these amazing plants.

We first met about ten years ago, when he was a successful Everest summiteer. Then I learned that his true passion was for his native Nepali plants, and together we began to transform the garden at Craigieburn. His new project is a dedicated Nepali garden, based on the riverside gorge that runs through his farm in the Sherpa village of Khari Khola.

Dawa , like all Sherpas, is a Buddhist, and you will find many echoes of this in the garden. I love the white chorten close to the drive, protecting us from ghosts and earthquakes; the strings of prayer flags, and down in the Nursery Garden a Sherpa house, which is eerily reminiscent of Dawa's home in the Himalayas.
