Around the House 2.

The house bed here is dominated in late summer by the giant Impatiens tinctoria with its large spurred white and crimson flowers. The rose is 'Fantin-Latour' and the climber Schizophragma, a showy plant in the hydrangea family.

On the west wall of the house a fig, 'Brown Turkey' is progressing ever upwards. I planted this for its wonderful foliage, but it also gives us a good crop of fruit. A noteworthy plant is the nine-foot tall Lobelia tupa 'Archibald's Form' with deep coral tubular flowers. Like the Impatiens, it's supposed to be tender, but both plants are doing their best to take over this area.

The pergola (made by the local Moffat blacksmith) is covered with the vine Vitis coignettiae. Its large leaves provide a shady tunnel in summer and its autumn colour of scarlet crimsons and purple provides on of the highlights of the late season. At the end of the pergola is the entrance to a small rose garden.
