Around the House.

In complete contrast, the area around the house is formal, with clipped box and yew and classic herbaceous plants. Climbers on the house are: Rose 'Graham Stuart Thomas' intertwined with Clematis plena purpurea elegans; Berberadopsis corallina, with waxy scarlet bells, and the showy pink and white-leaved Actinidia kolomikta.

The camellia is the deep pink double 'Leonard Messel'. The tall wall shrub by the front door is the Moroccan pineapple broom Cytisus battandieri.

The round pool is edged with stone that was originally around a wellhead in the stable yard. We found it scattered around the garden and were amazed to find it fitted together to make a complete circle. Like most garden ponds it inevitably leaks, but we made it deep enough for koi carp to thrive and even breed.
