Apple Tree Borders.
This area has been planted to reach its peak in spring, although
there's plenty of interest throughout the rest of the season.
Running parallel to the tall holly hedge is a line of four ornamental
crab apples, Malus 'Golden Hornet', equally lovely when in blossom
or hung with its bunches of clear yellow fruit.
Spring brings bulbs, especially the heavily-scented old pheasant's
eye narcissus, fritillaries, various primroses and primulas, lathyrus
vernus, and Lenten hellebores.
Later come orchids, astilbes, hardy geraniums, Meconopsis napaulensis,
Meconopsis 'Mrs Jebb' Rheum palmatum and the white Japanese anemone
'Coupe d'Argent'.
